Happy Wife, Happy Life.

Happy Wife, Happy Life.

It really pains my heart to hear and read various unbalanced statements such as, “If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy”, or everyone’s favorite, “Happy wife Happy life”. And I just read another one of these one-sided statements online today that I wasn’t too happy with. Don’t get me wrong, I want mama to be happy, and I certainly want my wife to be happy as well, but not at any cost.

I get that these statements may have come from a long line of women who had to, and still do, put up with the foolishness of their immature husbands. But, does these statements have to apply to all husbands as though we are all immature and foolish in our ways? I would say no. There are many husbands who are mature enough to know how to conduct themselves in their marriages without having to be reminded to love and care for their wives through one of these unbalanced statements. I believe that these statements only serve one of the following purposes.

1. To encourage husbands who are foolish and immature in their ways, to grow up and love their wives in a way that represents the directive that God gives all husbands in Ephesians 5:28.

2. To give wives, who are unwise and immature in their ways, the green light to take advantage of the kindness of their unsuspecting husbands. They use tactics such us pouting and other similar behaviors to fake their sadness, so that they can get what they are after.  And some wives even go as far as withholding intimate moments from their husbands, so that they can secure what they want. Lastly, there are some wives who knowingly and unknowingly use these statements to excuse their rude and disrespectful behaviors towards their husbands. This is wrong, and should be reconsidered by all wives who hold on to these statements as a license to manipulate their husbands into believing that they should always make them happy, no matter what.

Consider the following passages of scripture that will help you pursue greatness in your marriage as you apply them in your marriage

Ephesians 4:25 (ESV) – Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.

Colossians 3:9 (ESV) – Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices

1 Corinthian 7:3-5 (ESV) – 3. The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4. For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. 5. Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
