Secret Resentment

Are you secretly resentful or bitter about something that’s going on or has happened in your marriage?

In other words, are you holding on to something in your marriage that you are mad, upset, or angry about that you have not spoken to your spouse about for whatever reason?

Maybe you are mad about your spouse not helping out around the house and you secretly hold it in out of fear. Or maybe you are holding it in because you don’t know how to express how you feel about the situation to your spouse.

It also could be that your spouse did something that you are not happy about and you don’t have the courage to bring it up because you think that your spouse might say that you are stupid, petty, or over reacting about the situation.

If this is you, there is hope, but only if you choose to take action. Doing the following five things can help:

1. Don’t Panic

2. Pray

3. Remember what God has already done

4. Trust that God can fix and strengthen the broken and weak areas of your marriage

5. Release it and let God take care of the rest.

Consider the following passages of scripture

Ephesians 4:31-32 (ESV) – ³¹ Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. ³² Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

1 Peter 5:7 (ESV) – casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV) – ⁵ Trust in the Lord with all your heart,  and do not lean on your own understanding. ⁶ In all your ways acknowledge him,  and he will make straight your paths. ⁷ Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.

Colossians 3:19 (ESV) – Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.
